Mayor Tracey Roberts said Dr Aly’s declaration that she will dedicate her parliamentary career to creating a national strategy to deliver the benefits of growth to outer suburbs is admirable and very much needed in areas like the City of Wanneroo.

“Dr Aly’s announcement in her first speech to Federal Parliament shows that the challenges of outer suburbs are deservedly in the national spotlight now, and should and can no longer be ignored,” Mayor Roberts said.

“I congratulate Dr Aly for choosing to pursue such an essential goal, a goal that I passionately share with her because cities like Wanneroo deserve much greater funding and support from our State and Federal governments.

“As Western Australia’s largest growing local government area, 21 people move into the City every day, our population has doubled over the past decade and is currently 198,000, however that figure is predicted to double again over the next 25 years.

“This population forecast will undoubtedly create massive challenges for all levels of government and we need to work collaboratively to resolve issues including employment, transport and work life balance.

The City as a member of the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) will continue to push for improved infrastructure and funding for outer suburbs.

“A key focus for the City is creating local jobs for local people and an additional 2,800 jobs are needed every year to support the City’s rapidly growing population.

“I commend Dr Anne Aly for identifying the important issues close to both my heart and also the hearts of those who call the City home.

“The City will work with the Member for Cowan and any politician who takes up the fight on behalf of outer suburbs, I urge all politicians to take action.”
