The City of Wanneroo and the Connect Wanneroo campaign have welcomed news that the State Government will consider extending the rail line beyond Butler station.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the community advocacy campaign Connect Wanneroo has shown both sides of government how important rail to Yanchep and extending the Mitchell Freeway to Romeo Road are to residents and businesses across the City.

“In just two weeks the campaign has received immediate and strong community support generating more than 10,000 emails and almost 700 post cards to politicians and candidates standing in the March State Election,” Mayor Roberts said.

“The outstanding early support demonstrates how crucial these key infrastructure projects are to all our residents in the City of Wanneroo, especially as it relates to improving public transport links, access to health care and education, easing traffic congestion and attracting business to our rapidly growing area to stimulate local jobs.

“I am very pleased that Transport Minister Bill Marmion and his department are examining the proposal to extend the northern suburbs railway.

“I cannot emphasise enough the importance of the rail line extension to Yanchep and I strongly encourage the State Government to commit to the project as soon as possible, by 2021 at the latest, using value capture models with a joint partnership approach between private investors and government to make this a reality.

“Our community desperately needs this key infrastructure and with the support of the City of Wanneroo they are sending a message loud and clear to the State Government ahead of the election.”

The City covers an area of 684km2 from Breakwater Drive, Two Rocks to Beach Road in Koondoola and is Western Australia’s largest growing local government area with only one state owned road.

Currently 20 people move into the City every day, the population has doubled over the past decade to 198,000 and that figure is predicted to double again over the next 25 years.
