City calls for Human Spirit Award nominations and appeals to all road users for road safety

The City of Wanneroo will host a special ceremony to highlight the importance of safety for all road users.
Promoted by the WA Local Government Association’s RoadWise program, the annual Blessing of the Roads event highlights the importance of road safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians while travelling during the busy Easter period.
The ceremony will be held on Wednesday 28 March 2018 next to the City’s busiest intersection, Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive in Tapping.
Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts urges all road users to take care this Easter and school holiday period.
“All road users must play a part in road safety,” Mayor Roberts said. “We all need to drive carefully, follow speed limits, wear seatbelts, never use mobile phones while driving, and never drink and drive,” she said.
“It’s also important for drivers to be well rested and take breaks on long trips.”
During the ceremony, the WA Police Chaplain will pray for safety on all roads.
Representatives from WA Police Service, Department of Fire and Emergency Services and St John's Ambulance will attend.
The Human Spirit Awards will also be presented, acknowledging dedicated individuals and groups that contribute to road safety each day.
Nominations for the Human Spirit Awards are now open.
The awards are aimed at individuals or groups that have:
- promoted and supported road safety
- participated in road safety projects, campaigns or activities
- developed policies or strategies to reduce road related deaths or trauma, or
- raised awareness of local safety issues.
People such as school crossing attendants, local police officers and parents who assist in school road safety programs are excellent examples of people who may be nominated.
