Education on Show

Published Thursday, 29th March 2018

Teachers and early educators from schools and day cares across the City of Wanneroo have discovered the many education programs and services the City offers.

More than 40 people attended the first City of Wanneroo Education Expo, held at the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre to showcase the wide variety of free or lowcost quality education programs.

These range from museum and heritage, civics and citizenship, waste and sustainability, visual arts, early childhood support programs, conservation, youth services, libraries and youth entrepreneurship programs.

The day also included the launch of Noongar Museum in a Box; hands-on museum outreach kits with a huge collection of multi-sensory resources, carefully selected in consultation with Aboriginal educators to introduce young children to Noongar culture, language and history.

Schools are able to book these informative kits, which also include guides for educators jam-packed with activity suggestions to integrate Aboriginal perspectives across the Early Years Framework and Australian curriculum.

More than 25 schools have already registered to use the resources. Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said there were many ways the City could support teaching and encourage student learning.

“The City has so many useful education resources and it is important that teachers are aware of what is available,” Mayor Roberts said.

“Heritage education is taken to a whole new level with Buckingham House, Cockman House and the Wanneroo Regional Museum, and we have our very own Waste Education Officer who can visit schools and lift the bin lid on what happens to waste and how to reduce, reuse and recycle.”
