Lifetime rego the go for furry friends

Residents are being encouraged by the City of Wanneroo to take up lifetime registrations for their dogs and cats, saving both money and peace of mind.

Lifetime registrations offer a cost effective option for ensuring that much loved pets can be reunited with their rightful owners should they wander from home.

By law, all dogs aged three months and over must be registered, microchipped, and wear a registration tag and disc showing the owner’s name and address.

Cats aged six months and over must be registered, microchipped and sterilised.

The annual registration fee for an unsterilised dog is $50 per year compared to $250 for lifetime, while a sterilised cat costs $20 a year or $100 for a lifetime.

A 50 per cent discount is available to those with a seniors’ card, as well as a pensioner concession card, State concession card or Commonwealth seniors’ card.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said people may shy away from lifetime registrations if they were considering moving home.

“However, owners who move house within Western Australia can simply transfer their dog registration to the new Council, free of charge,” Mayor Roberts said.

“As a dog owner myself, I certainly know first-hand that life time registration is not only cost effective but also convenient, and reduces the risk of expired registrations,” she said.

Existing annual registration renewals expire on 31 October so people will receive reminder notices in early October.

All pet owners attending the City’s Dog’s Breakfast event on Sunday 21 October are encouraged to visit the City of Wanneroo stand and register their dogs and cats on the day. Please note, a microchip number is required for registration.
