Did you know the City of Wanneroo is home to several shipwrecks? Find out more about Wanneroo's shipwreck past through a series of fun activities during the April school holidays.
Around 400 years ago European navigators began sailing perilously close to Western Australia on their way to South East Asia. Many voyages ended tragically with vessels shipwrecked and sailors thinking,” I should have turned earlier”. The Wanneroo coast is now home to several ship wrecks lying beneath the waves; some as recent as the 20th century. Did you know two of the suburbs in Wanneroo are named after shipwrecks?
From the 1920s onwards the coastline around Wanneroo began to be opened up with roads which meant residents of the surrounding area could work and holiday here. From whaling to holiday shacks, the Wanneroo Coast is full of historical riches (and just maybe the odd silver coin). The Wanneroo Regional Museum will be conducting a series of activities in the April school holidays to allow you to discover more about our shipwreck past and our maritime history.
Please call the museum on 9405 5920 for more information.
