Bins and collections FAQs
Here are some reasons why your bin may not have been collected:
- Change of round: The City sometimes needs to change scheduled collection rounds, which can alter the time your bin is collected. Ensure your bin is out by 6am on collection day.
- Bin placement: Bins must be placed one metre from the kerb with wheels facing away, spaced at least one metre apart from each other and from obstacles like cars, fences, and letterboxes. Ensure your bin is out by 6am on collection day.
- Contamination: If your bin contains inappropriate or hazardous items, it won't be collected. A sticker will be left to indicate which items to remove.
- Weight: Bins should not exceed 70kg. Overweight bins cannot be collected until excess waste is removed.
- Jammed bin: Overfilling and compacting waste can prevent bins from being emptied. Loosen the contents and ensure all cardboard boxes are flattened to facilitate collection.
- Foreign bin: Only bins issued by the City of Wanneroo are collected. This service is funded through your waste service charge in your rates. If you have a foreign bin from another local government, please contact the City to fix this.
How can I report a missed bin collection?
If your bin was not collected on your regular day, you can report it using the general enquiry form or by calling us on (08) 9405 5000.
We use CCTV and GPS tracking to verify missed collections. If your bin wasn’t out by 6am, was overfilled or blocked, it may not qualify for a free return collection and additional fees may apply.
Why is there a sticker on my bin?
Stickers are placed to notify you of issues preventing bin collection or as reminders for future changes to collections.
Can I have an extra bin collection?
Yes. If you have more rubbish than usual and can’t wait for your next scheduled collection, you can request an extra bin collection for a fee of $84 per bin. Your bin will be collected within 2 business days after payment and request submission.
No, your waste service charge covers a once-a-week collection for general waste and once a fortnight for recycling and garden organics. If you regularly exceed capacity, consider paying for an additional bin.
Can I get help to put my bin out due to strength or mobility limitations?
Yes. The City offers an Assisted Household Service for residents who are unable to manage their bins due to age, illness or mobility limitations. A site visit may be required to ensure it's safe for our team to assist.
To find out if you're eligible, please contact the City at (08) 9405 5000 to speak to our Waste Services team.
Can I return an additional bin I no longer need?
Yes, if you find you no longer need an additional bin, please contact the City on (08) 9405 5000 to arrange for its collection and cancel the additional bin.
My bin collection is too early in the morning and wakes my family. What can I do?
Waste must be collected outside normal business hours to avoid traffic congestion. Unfortunately, this can cause noise disturbances.
Where should I keep my bin when it is not out for collection?
When it is not your collection day, keep your bins on your property. Store them in a shady, well-ventilated area. Keep the lids closed to prevent odours and pest intrusion. Clean your bins periodically using appropriate cleaning agents.
Where can I find information about the Three Bin System?
For detailed information, visit the How to use your bins page.
Will a public holiday affect my bin day?
In most cases, bin collections continue as normal on public holidays.
The only exceptions are Good Friday, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. If your collection falls on one of these days, it will take place one day later.
You can check your bin collection dates online.
Bulk verge collection FAQs
Why hasn’t my bulk verge items been collected?
As different types of bulk waste are collected by different trucks, bulk waste must be separated by type and placed on your verge at least 1m apart. If items are not eligible for collection, a non-compliance card will be issued explaining how to properly dispose of these items. If a non-compliance card was not left, please contact the City on (08) 9405 5000.
Can I request extra verge collections during the financial year?
At this stage, extra verge collections or increased volume beyond your annual allocation are not available.
If you have extra bulky waste, we encourage you to consider donating or rehoming usable items. Alternatively, you can dispose of them at waste drop-off or recycling facilities nearby.
Please note that unused collections do not carry over into the next financial year.
Can I save or share my verge collections?
You can’t carry your collection over to the next year, but you’re welcome to share it with a neighbour if it stays within the allowed limits and they’re happy for you to do so.
Please make sure you have their approval before adding anything to their collection.
I’ve just moved in and it says all the collections for my address have been used. What should I do?
Please contact the City on (08) 9405 5000.
Wangara Recycling Facility vouchers FAQs
What do I do if I have lost my Wangara Recycling Facility voucher?
You can contact the City to cancel the lost voucher and reissue the remaining ones valid for the current voucher season (1 August to 31 July).
Can I give my Wangara Recycling Facility voucher away?
