Where: Wanneroo Regional Gallery, 3 Rocca Way, Wanneroo

The travelling exhibition is now proudly on display at Wanneroo Regional Gallery, developed by the National Museum of Australia in collaboration with Australian Geographic.

Mayor Linda Aitken said the City of Wanneroo was honoured to host such fantastic photography and encouraged the community to visit the free exhibition.

“Featuring stunning photographic images from the Australian Geographic archive, this exhibition celebrates the bush, outback and coast, and the people who live there,” she said.

“It will transport you to some of the most rugged and remote parts of the country where you will discover the remarkable stories of ordinary Australians.”

Perth-based travel photographer and teacher Seng Mah will host workshops and seminars to tie into the exhibition.

“A Portrait of Australia is a time capsule of where Australia is right now and anyone attending the exhibition will gain a better, deeper understanding of the multifaceted, multicultural and variety of life in Australia, from the iconic to perhaps the not so iconic,” he said.

“The exhibition is going to be eye opening, touch the heart and enrich the soul!”

National Museum director Dr Mathew Trinca said partnering with Australian Geographic to tell authentic Australian stories was a marvellous opportunity.

“Using the very finest storytelling methods, we’re taking Australian stories to venues around the country by combining the National Museum’s exhibition and curatorial expertise with Australian Geographic’s 30 years of unparalleled photographic coverage of Australia’s land, nature and people,” he said.

“This beautifully presented exhibition transforms words and pictures into a truly immersive experience.”

Tattoos are a conversation starter.

Many members and veterans of the Australian Defence Forces have tattoos, and while their reasons for getting tattooed are as varied as the people themselves, self-expression and belonging play a part.

They also share a common purpose in getting inked: to remember.

Inscribed on skin are their identities as veterans, the commemoration of loss, experiences of trauma and overcoming adversity, the bonds of family and friends, and acknowledging the experiences that make us who we are.

Hear the stories behind the tattoos in the Ink in the Lines exhibition; showcasing Australia’s modern veterans and their families, who through their tattoos commemorate the people, events and experiences which shaped their lives.

Find out more about the exhibition at the Australian War Memorial website.

Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist

Susie Vickery, Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist installed at Mundaring Arts Centre, 2019.

When: Saturday 27 August to Saturday 15 October 2022 //10am to 4pm Wednesday to Saturday (closed Sunday and Public Holidays)
Where: Wanneroo Gallery, Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre, 3 Rocca Way, Wanneroo

Hours: 10am to 4pm Wednesday to Saturday (closed Sunday and Public Holidays)

Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist, an ART ON THE MOVE touring exhibition by Susie Vickery comes to Wanneroo Gallery as part of the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost.

Peregrinations of a Citizen Botanist is an immersive and finely crafted installation by Susie Vickery which takes the form of a cabinet of curiosities, charting the journey of the 18th Century French botanist Jacques-Julien Houtou de Labillardière, who came to Western Australia in 1792 on the ship Recherche, captained by Bruni d’Entrecasteaux.

Vickery presents an alternative history of Labillardière’s journey, with the botanist gradually shedding his preconceptions as he encounters a rich and ancient land where his language and assumptions about the world fall away. At a time of accelerating climate crisis, this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on our relationships with home, history and environment, and by imagining an alternative past, to think creatively about possible futures.

This project has been made possible through the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost managed by the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries, supported by Royalties for Regions and delivered by ART ON THE MOVE. The Act-Belong-Commit Engagement Program presented by ART ON THE MOVE is sponsored by Healthway promoting the Act-Belong-Commit health message.

Let Me Be Myself - The Life Story of Anne Frank

Where: Wanneroo Gallery, Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre, 3 Rocca Way, Wanneroo

Produced by the Anne Frank Australia Exhibition board in conjunction with Anne Frank House, Amsterdam, this exhibition has been an outstanding global success since its launch in 2015.

Let Me Be Myself – The Life Story of Anne Frank reflects on the life of Anne Frank from her birth in Frankfurt, Germany in 1929 to her death in Bergen-Belsen in 1945.

Persecuted for being Jewish, Anne Frank and her family go into hiding in a secret annex during the Second World War – her story may well be the most well known of the Holocaust. During her stay in hiding, Anne wrote in a diary daily, recording what life was like in hiding. After the war, her diary was published and strikes a chord with many people around the world. It is now one of the most read, most important and most inspiring books, helping us understand and empathise with the millions of victims of anti-Semitism.

Explore her extraordinary story and how it’s relevant today through exquisite large-scale images, a model of the Anne Frank House, extracts from her diary, Second World War memorabilia and a copy of her diary. Designed for families, this exhibition highlights prejudice, and discriminatory issues then and now through young voices.

In Arcadia I once asked Eli in which language did he think, to which he cleverly replied “I think in pictures” – Michael Perry Kotzen quoted in - David Solly Sandler. ‘100 Years of ARC Memories: Arcadia-South African Jewish Orphanage, 1906-2006.’

The City of Wanneroo and local collector David Solly Sandler are proud to present an exhibition of artworks by the late Eli Zagoria, a prolific local artist who emigrated from South Africa in 1992 and made his living painting and sketching the people and places of Perth.

Eli sketched over 15 000 portraits in his lifetime and mastered the art of oil painting on various surfaces. His artworks capture iconic scenes of Perth in the 1990s and are also influenced by his own fascinating life. Latvian born, Eli grew up in a Jewish orphanage in South Africa and fought at Tobruk in WWII before being taken as a Prisoner of War in Italy and Germany which through amazing circumstances changed the arc of his life towards painting and illustration.

Visit the Gallery at Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre from Saturday 17 November to Saturday 15 December to see an extensive collection of original works by this fascinating artist.

Between 1914 and 1918, 23 members of the Wanneroo community served in the ‘War to End All Wars’. In the 100th anniversary year of the end of the global conflict that scarred the beginning of the 20th century, we remember those who served. Some lost their lives, some returned to home and family forever changed by the experience. This exhibition honours those men that went to war and the loved ones who waited for them.

They include James Dunn Bennett who lost his life in 1915 at Gallipoli on what came to be known as Anzac Day, and Richard William Bettles who was a captured in France in April 1917 and interned as a Prisoner of War at Limburg, Germany until he was repatriated in January 1919.

Narrative Threads explores place, history and identity.  The artists involved are all women with an interest in history and place and how these relate to their own identity.  Among them are collectors, re-users of other people's discards, explorers of everyday life and domestic traditions; those who draw on family stories and memory; and migrants whose work investigates the divide between different landscapes and cultures.

The exhibition features artwork by Wendy Lugg, who has lived a lifetime in Western Australia, and invited artists Helena Bogucki, Trish Little, Elisa Markes-Young and Janie Matthews, who were all born elsewhere.

They come together to exhibit textiles, jewellery, installation and photography, alongside artefacts, tools and samples that give insight into their inspiration, ideas and processes.

The themes being explored by the artists closely align with the history of Wanneroo, which has strong elements of migration, maintaining cultural and domestic traditions, adjusting to new landscapes and creatively using and repurposing available resources.

The word ‘homespun’ connotes both a rough fabric worn by country people and the human qualities thought to be associated with life in the country and of ‘home’. In the nineteenth-century United States, poets and novelists celebrated an idealised ‘age of homespun’ that symbolised the virtues of self-sufficiency and egalitarian simplicity. It is these qualities that defined the people of the once rural outpost of Wanneroo 16miles (nearly 26 km) from Perth. Home and Family formed the fabric of this community and we celebrate it with favourite objects from the Wanneroo Regional Museum Collection. From samplers to sewing machines, these domestic items speak of a simpler time of self-sufficiency born of necessity.

The themes being explored by the artists closely align with the history of Wanneroo, which has strong elements of migration, maintaining cultural and domestic traditions, adjusting to new landscapes and creatively using and repurposing available resources.

"Let Me Be Myself" contains seven historical modules. The structure and design of this part of the new exhibition enables visitors to identify with the personal story of Anne Frank.

Large-size pictures show Anne's happy early childhood in Frankfurt, followed by the immigration to Amsterdam and the time in hiding.

In a consequent manner the exhibition connects the personal story of the Frank family with the important historical events of that time: the rise of the national socialists, the isolation and discrimination of the Jewish population, eventually escalating in the Holocaust. The connection between the personal story of Anne Frank and the historical context shows the consequences the anti-Jewish measures had on one particular person.

To emphasise the chronological order of events, almost every panel contains a time line.

Below the time line is the personal story of Anne Frank and above the time line the visitor is confronted with the 'big historical events' of that time. In this manner it is easy to understand the connections between the 'small' and 'big' history.

Photo collection of the Anne Frank Stichting. (Amsterdam).

Montages: The Full Cut 1999–2015 presents the full suite of 8 montage films by artist Tracey Moffatt and collaborator Gary Hillberg. Presented together for the first time, the exhibition spans 16 years of the artist and editor’s collaborative practice and includes their most recent work, The Art (2015).

The exhibition is an ode to cinema and to the cinematic form, offering unprecedented insight into the stereotypes that populate our collective cultural imagination. In this suite of montages, Moffatt and Hillberg source footage from Hollywood films, tapping into the humour and pathos of universally shared subjects like art, revolution, love and destruction.

Moffatt’s recent appointment as Australia’s representative artist at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017 is testament to the timeliness in presenting this significant body of work.

Montages: The Full Cut, 1999 – 2015 was curated and developed by Artspace, Sydney and is touring nationally in partnership with Museums & Galleries of NSW.

An exhibition by Indigenous photographer, Michael Jalaru Torres in collaboration with Paper Mountain Gallery.

Generations of marking the landscape, objects and the skin has shown that Australia’s first peoples had a complex language of design that connected with an oral history spanning regions and lifetimes forever evolving to the markings of today.

A certain line forming a design on each surface tells a unique songline - animal designs next to a Jill, scarring of the skin shows years of lore, patterns on wood showing clan groups and songlines, carvings on shell to tell stories in dance. All these markings are timeless.

Today we use inks and pigments, metal and digital code to make new markings. These markings show contemporary life of first peoples in the new global connected world, using new techniques we make new scars on the landscape, express ourselves with ink on skin, share new songlines on paper and canvas and capture our liyarn (Soul) and people on camera. Our people are forever evolving to share our stories and today is no different.

This series showcases modern and traditional stories connected by the people and the country. The artists’ eyes and hands creates modern dance of movement over time using cameras and paper, capturing the vibrant colours of country to the raw emotion of monochrome images of his people. These images tell a story through the lines and patterns, the scars that everyone has of their life expressed on their skin to the shifting movement of country of six seasons.

Claimed Lands: The impact of colonisation on the Western Australian landscape

Claimed Lands piece

When
18 February 2017 to 8 April 2017

Jess Hart's practice is influenced by her Indigenous History and Knowledge major and interest in colonial settlement. Her artwork is centred around the idea of our shared past, to make art that challenges the viewer and the generally accepted discourse of local history. Her aim is to create a series of works that blur the line between museum and art.

This exhibition has been facilitated in partnership with Paper Mountain an artist-run initiative, Gallery and co-working space, dedicated to supporting a diverse range of contemporary art projects. Jess Hart is the University of WA’s recipient of the Artsource Industry Award 2016, an award offered to the most industry-ready graduates from the art faculties of Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, North Metropolitan (TAFE) and the University of WA.

Pictured above: Cause and Effect, was created to represent the effects of farming on the natural landscape and how this destruction of the environment has influenced the way farmers can use their land. The salt rising from the ground, and the fires destroying the land and crops above, whilst the clearing of the gum trees to make way for crops and cattle, exacerbates the problem of salinity.

Without Consent: Australia's past adoption practices

Creche scene

When
1 December 2016 to 14 January 2017

Wanneroo Gallery was home to a new exhibition Without Consent: Australia’s past adoption practices, which brought to light a previously hidden aspect of Australia’s past. The exhibition was curated by the National Archives of Australia and offered those affected by forced adoptions the opportunity to share their experiences – some for the first time ever.

It is estimated that at least 150,000 adoptions took place from the 1950s to the 1970s; a significant number of them were forced adoptions.  Many of the women who had their babies taken were unmarried and, because of the stigma attached to unmarried mothers at the time, were often forced to live a lie for decades. For some, it was a secret they took to their graves.

The National Archives have also developed a website, following former Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s national apology to those affected by forced adoptions and it aims to show the truth – that the babies taken for adoption were dearly loved and wanted by their parents.

The exhibition was a tribute to the courage and generosity of those who volunteered to share their experiences and, in doing so, exposed this aspect of Australia’s history.

A Crash of Rhinos

A Crash of Rhinos

When
26 August - 12 October 2016

The City of Wanneroo in conjunction with the State Library of Western Australia exhibited the work from the highly acclaimed children’s author/illustrator Patricia Mullins.

A Crash of Rhinos was published in 2010 and won the Notable Book (Picture Book of the Year) CBCA Awards in 2011. The complete set of illustrations and preliminary material from the book was acquired in 2011 by the State Library of Western Australia to be included in their Dr Peter Williams collection of illustrations and thanks to their generous loan to the Wanneroo Gallery, we were able to showcase these works to a new audience.

Bush Babies - Honouring our Elders

Bush babies

When
21 July 2016 - 22 Augusty 2016

Bush Babies – Honouring our Elders was a collection of paintings of sixteen Elders who were painted as part of Community Arts Network’s Bush Babies community arts project.

The Community Arts Network’s Bush Babies community arts project records and preserves the unique stories of the Elders who were born in the bush, reserves, missions or fringes of towns.

The paintings, and the short stories that accompany them, open a window on a sorry part of our history. The Elders featured in this exhibition all lived under harsh government policies that denied them basic human rights, including the privilege of being born at the local hospital.

Many of them were born in tents, makeshift shelters or under the stars, with senior women in their families serving as midwives. This exhibition gives an outlet to share this story to audiences and create awareness of these issues amongst communities.

The exhibition was inspired by a single photograph taken during one of Community Arts Network’s digital media workshops. The photographer, Jarrad Seng, who is well known for his work with musicians Ed Sheeran and Passenger, captured a stunning image of Ballardong Elder Hazel Winmar on her 99th birthday. The photograph inspired Wheatbelt artist Graham Smith to paint her portrait and this in turn inspired other artists to come forward to volunteer to honour an elder on canvas.
