The City’s Waste Plan

The Waste Plan outlines the City’s approach to managing waste, setting clear priorities and measurable targets.

The Plan is organised around five key areas:

  • Waste services - Enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of waste collection and processing.
  • Waste infrastructure - Upgrading facilities and technology to support sustainable waste management.
  • Policies and procurement - Developing policies that support ethical and economical purchasing and waste handling.
  • Data management - Using data to improve decision-making and track progress.
  • Behaviour change programs - Initiating programs and initiatives that encourage community participation in waste reduction and recycling.

By focusing on these areas, we aim to provide a level of service that meets the community's expectations and contributes significantly to our environmental responsibilities.

How waste is processed

The City has implemented a three-bin system to enhance the efficiency of waste processing, improve resource recovery, and minimize landfill waste. This system not only benefits the environment but also helps control waste disposal rates for residents, as landfill disposal is the most costly option.

How garden organics are processed

Use of garden organics (GO) bins enables the City to efficiently divert garden waste from landfills.

The contents of the GO bins are first taken to the Wangara Greens Recycling Facility. At this facility, garden waste undergoes a manual sorting process to remove contaminants before being transported to GO Organics in Gingin. Here, the clean greens are composted over a 12-week period, after which they are screened and transformed into high-quality, resalable soil amendments, such as potting mix.

To see this transformative journey from your garden to the final product, we invite you to watch the video below.

How recyclables are processed

Recyclable materials from your yellow lid bin are processed at a Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Here, waste undergoes both manual and mechanical sorting to separate various materials such as plastics, paper, aluminium, steel, cardboard, and glass.

In Western Australia, recycled glass is repurposed into road base, while other sorted materials are baled and sent to manufacturers to be reprocessed into new products.

How general waste is processed

Contents from your general waste bin are taken to Tamala Park, where they are deposited into landfill.

You can help send less to landfill by making a few small changes to reduce the amount of waste you dispose of.
