Get involved

From bush tours to planting days, cocky counting to turtle tracking, we are always on the look out for citizen scientists to help conserve and maintain our City.

On this page:

Saving our Snake-necked Turtle Project

In partnership with the City of Joondalup and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), the City of Wanneroo is a partner council in the Saving our Snake-necked Turtle project (SOSNT) for wetlands within Yellagonga Regional Park, in collaboration with Murdoch University and the South West Group.

The project includes a team of volunteers trained as ‘Turtle Trackers’ patrolling Yellagonga wetlands during the nesting season (in spring) and protecting the female turtles who emerge from the lakes to find a spot to nest on land.

The Turtle Trackers monitor turtle nesting behaviour using the TurtleSAT app and are also trained to protect the nests to prevent predators such as ravens and foxes from destroying them.

Want to get involved in monitoring our local turtle populations?

1. Attend a SOSNT information night.

Upcoming sessions include:

Tuesday 20 August 2024 // 6pm – 8.30pm

Banksia Room, City of Wanneroo Civic Centre, 23 Dundebar Road, Wanneroo

Register online at: eventbrite.com.au

2. Join SOSNT, the Citizen Science Project.

You can become a trained ‘Turtle Tracker’ and get involved in the upcoming tracker program by registering online through the SOSNT website: www.sosnt.net.au/get-involved.
