Come along to the Wanneroo Regional Museum for facilitated, hands-on, inquiry based learning programs focused on local history. A self-guided museum program is also available for primary school students.

Museum education program outline

  • 9:15 - Arrive and orientation
  • 9:30 to 9:50 - Introduction and timeline
  • 9:50 to 10:30 - 1st roation (lesson/museum)
  • 10:30 to 10:50 - Recess
  • 10:50 to 11:30 - 2nd rotation (lesson/museum)
  • 11:30 to 11:55 - Peg doll activity
  • 11:55 to 12:15 - Recap and depart

Museum programs

Year 1 and 2: Toys and Tech Through Time – 3 hours total duration including morning tea break

When: Monday to Friday mornings: 9:15am to 12:15pm

What can technology and toys from the past reveal about how people lived and their connections to life today? How do museums tell stories?

In this immersive and hands on program, students explore Wanneroo Museum and enjoy a ‘toyshop’ comparison activity, getting hands on with toys from the past and present.

History

Year 1: The differences and similarities between children's daily lives and their parents' and grandparents' - leisure time.

Year 2: The impact of changing technology on people's lives and how the technology of the past differs from the technology used today. 

Questioning and researching

Pose and respond to reflective questions about objects, people, places and events in the past and present. 

Locate information from a variety of provided sources.

Year 1-3: Noongar Boodja Wanneroo - 3 hours total duration including morning tea break

When: Monday to Friday mornings: 9:15am to 12:15pm

How has Noongar History shaped Wanneroo? Did you know the name Wanneroo comes from a Noongar digging stick?

In this interactive program, students will learn about Noongar culture through object investigation. And explore Wanneroo Museum, focussing on the Welcome to Country exhibit and the Six Seasons Play Table.

History

Year 1: The diverse structures and sizes of families, the familial roles today and how these have stayed the same or changed over time.

Year 2: The importance today of an historical site or place and why it has heritage significance and cultural values for present generations.

Year 3: Significant events, symbols and emblems that are important to Australia’s shared identity and diversity, and how they are celebrated, commemorated or recognised in Australia.

Year 2-5: Become a Curator for a Day

When: Monday to Friday mornings: 9:15am to 12:15pm

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a Museum? Well look no further!

In this new hands-on program, students explore Wanneroo Museum and investigate the skills needed to be a museum curator. It gives students a look at museum work, focusing on curatorial skills such as object investigation and exhibition design.

Pricing

Facilitated programs accommodate a minimum of 20 students to a maximum of 35 students with a tiered pricing system:

  • 20-24 students: $125.00 (inc. GST)
  • 25-29 students: $155.00 (inc. GST)
  • 30-35 students: $175.00 (inc. GST)
  • Adults are free of charge.

We require a ratio of at least one adult to five students. Additional adult helpers are always welcome.

Self-led program

Year 1 to Year 5: Wanneroo Past Investigators - 60 minutes duration

Information on excursions

When: Weekdays - booking required

Students explore the museum in small groups, investigating themes such as our rich Noongar history and heritage, roads and transport, communication, migration and farming. Handling objects and activities are linked to the themes for a multimodal approach, and students can use a reflection booklet to answer open-ended questions and make notes. Please see our friendly front-of-house staff for ideas.

Cost per session
One session = maximum of 35; no minimum. Free if you photocopy and bring along the self-guided booklet for your students. There is a charge of $60 if we photocopy the booklets for your students.
