Advocacy
One of the goals in our Strategic Community Plan 2021 - 2031 is to be a future focused City that advocates, engages and partners to progress the priorities of the community.
The City works closely with other tiers of government to advocate for political support and funding contributions to enable us to deliver vital infrastructure and social services for our community.
This approach has secured significant public investment into the City of Wanneroo, delivering key public infrastructure such as the Mitchell Freeway extension and the Rail to Yanchep along with funding for the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre which is now under construction.
Advocacy Agenda
In 2024 Council endorsed a list of 11 advocacy priorities to create a strategic and rounded approach to advocacy. The Council-endorsed projects cover themes of:
- Liveability
- Productivity
- Wellbeing
- Sustainability.
These principles drive the City’s advocacy agenda, ensuring our conversations with government reflect the community’s priorities.

Putting Community First campaign
The City’s Putting Community First campaign ran in the lead up to the March 2025 State election and the May 2025 Federal election. This campaign focused on securing support for three priority projects: Girrawheen Hub Precinct, Alkimos Regional Open Space and Wanneroo Recreation Precinct.
Community involvement was integral to this campaign’s success, with around 10,000 emails sent by community to relevant election candidates voicing the community’s compelling support.
Thanks to the community’s strong participation and the Government’s recognition of the importance of these projects to our community, significant support was secured for the Girrawheen Hub Precinct. Hon. Dr Anne Aly MP, Member for Cowan, announced a $5.5 million commitment from the Federal Government toward the project.
This has built on the 2021 WA State Government commitment of $5m for Wanneroo Recreation Precinct gratefully received from Hon Sabine Winton MLA, Member for Wanneroo and the WA State Government securing the land for Alkimos Regional Open Space which is expected to be vested to the City in 2025. The City will continue to work with State and Federal governments to progress these key community facilities.
