Wanneroo Regional Museum

About

The City of Wanneroo is very fortunate to have three museum sites: two historic houses - Cockman House and Buckingham House - and the Wanneroo Regional Museum.

The design/planning process for the Museum began in 2006 as part of the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre planning with the museum opening in September 2009. The Wanneroo Museum provides a range of stories and themes based on the development of the area, from our Indigenous past, pioneers through to modern Wanneroo and its incredible evolution in recent times.

This attractive, modern museum has an exhibition space, climate controlled storage as well as cleaning and conservation areas. The exhibition space is based on a number of themes built around Wanneroo Road with objects ranging in size from a road roller to a single egg scale.

The Wanneroo Regional Museum has a popular education program and outreach resources for local schools.

The Museum also has ongoing public programs including school holiday activities to entertain the whole family.

The Community History Centre forms an important part of the Museum space, providing an extensive collection about the history and heritage of Wanneroo including books, pamphlets, photographs, maps, oral history interviews, archive material and newspapers.

The 13 Mile Cookbook

The origin of the 13 Mile Cookbook began with Eileen Turner nee Cockman who had collected recipes from a number of Cockman family relatives. The 13 Mile Cookbook was produced by the City of Wanneroo to celebrate this special kind of social heritage as part of the 20th anniversary of Cockman House opening as a museum in 2009.

Completed in 1860, Cockman House was the home of James and Mary Ann Cockman. It represents the little known colonial success story of a couple who went from servants to freehold landowners in 24 years and established a family connection to the Wanneroo area that continues today.

Cultural and Civic Trail

Even before the official establishment of the Wanneroo town site at the Wanneroo Road 16 mile peg in 1907, a number of important community places began to spring up to service the needs of the growing district. Most have come and gone, a few remain, but all have been important places in the building of the Wanneroo community we know today. Rediscover these on the Wanneroo Town Centre Cultural and Civic Trail.
